Roland Ryf

Roland Ryf is a Distinguished Member of Technical Staff at Bell Laboratories, Alcatel-Lucent, Holmdel, NJ. He received the diploma and the Ph.D. in physics from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) Zürich, Switzerland, working on nonlinear optics and optical parallel processing. After joining Bell Labs in May 2000 he has been working on large port-count optical cross-connect switches, high resolution optical wavelength filters, wavelength-selective switches, and numerous first experimental demonstration of long distance space-division multiplexed transmission over multimode fibers and coupled-core multicore fibers. Dr. Ryf authored/coauthored over 150 journal and conference publications and holds over 30 patents.

For JLT he is handling submissions on the following topics:

  • Space-division multiplexing subsystems and systems
  • Multimode and multicore optical waveguides and fibers
  • Mode multiplexers for multimode and multicore fibers
  • Digital signal processing for space-division multiplexed systems
  • MEMS and LCOS based subsystems for switching and mode coupling
  • Wavelength-selective switches
  • Optical crossconnects
